Today I celebrate the finale of my cross-country journey by arriving at my destination, New York City. This trip has been more than a physical journey; it has been a profound exploration of my thoughts, values, and the nature of my second stage of life. As I reflect on each day of this 12-day odyssey (driven in a Honda Odyssey at an imaginary slow speed of 15 miles per hour including day and night rather than 180 miles in the Indy 500), I find new wealth in the form of non-stop daily essays documenting my experiences and insights. These writings are the treasures that will continue to grow and enrich my life.
Day 1: Setting a Reflective Tone in Reno
The journey began with a visit to a close friend in Reno. Our conversations about life's journey, particularly the concept of optimization, sparked deep reflections. I realized that striving to do the best for ourselves and our families often leads to internal struggles. Retirement planning, typically viewed through a financial lens, takes on a broader meaning when considering emotional and psychological readiness. This day set a reflective tone and highlighted the importance of holistic planning for the future.
Day 2: Reliving the Journey on Highway I-80
Driving from Reno to Salt Lake City on I-80 was a magical experience. The vast plains and the illusion of the road merging with the sky at the horizon evoked a sense of infinite possibility. This leg of the drive reminded me that the journey is as important as the destination. The beauty of time and space symbolizes the limitless potential of life and encourages me to embrace each moment and the journey itself.
Day 3: Proactively Taking a Detour
On day 3, I reflected on an important career decision I made in 2000. Despite a promising start in my first career, I decided to make a change that was more aligned with my true purpose in coming to the United States. This proactive detour required courage and foresight, mirroring the choices one must make at critical junctures in life. It reinforced the importance of aligning one's actions with personal values and long-term goals.
Day 4: Disconnecting in Yellowstone National Park
Spending time in Yellowstone National Park was a unique experience of disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with nature. The lack of internet access and digital distractions allowed me to fully immerse myself in the beauty of the park. The day was a reminder of the importance of stepping away from technology to find clarity and peace. The majesty of nature offered a space for deep inner reflection, similar to exploring the landscapes of my own mind and heart.
Day 5: Embracing the Canyon's True Essence
The breathtaking views of the Grand Canyon in different lighting conditions - sunset and overcast morning - offered a lesson in appreciating natural beauty in its true essence. The canyon's authenticity, color, and aged formations reminded me that true beauty lies in authenticity and natural states. This day taught me to appreciate things as they are, without trying to change or enhance them artificially, whether in nature or in life.
Day 6: Growing with Greatness at Mount Rushmore
Day 6 took me to Mount Rushmore, where I reflected on the concept of growing with greatness. The story of sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his relationship with the presidents carved into the mountain illustrated how proximity to greatness can elevate one's own aspirations and sense of purpose. The day emphasized the importance of learning from and being inspired by those who have achieved remarkable feats, and using their stories to fuel our own journeys.
An encounter with a middle-aged graduate of an engineering school highlighted the power of education and lifelong learning. This interaction reaffirmed my commitment to continued learning in my second stage of life. It underscored that education is not limited to our early years, but is a lifelong journey that keeps us engaged, curious, and adaptable.
Day 8: Career Transformation and Independence Day in Omaha
Spending Independence Day in Omaha allowed me to reflect on my career transition to cloud technologies. Inspired by Warren Buffett's philosophy of value investing, I recognized the parallels in making informed, strategic decisions in both investments and career moves. The day was a celebration of the autonomy and freedom gained through thoughtful, value-driven choices that led to a fulfilling career and early retirement.
Day 9: Being Humble in a Friend’s Garage
Day 9, spent in a friend's garage, was a lesson in humility and the true spirit of trailblazing. This humble setting reminded me that great ideas and ventures often begin in humble places. It reinforced the importance of being willing to take risks, seek guidance, and invest time and resources in long-term goals. Humility, courage and perseverance are key characteristics of a true trailblazer.
Reflecting on the impact of sports in my life on Day 10, the lessons of perseverance, resilience, and appreciation for epic moments began to emerge. Like Reggie Miller's legendary "Miller Time," true victories in life often come after numerous failures and frustrations. Sports taught me the value of perseverance and the joy of overcoming challenges that are applicable to all areas of life.
Day 11: Racing History and Academic Excellence
The exploration of racing history and academic excellence on Day 11 highlighted the metaphor of life as a journey. While life may feel like a race at times, the true value lies in the experiences and lessons learned along the way. A slower, more deliberate pace allows for deeper appreciation and understanding, much like the thorough pursuit of academic excellence. As my wife often said, “Live slow". I will not speed.
Day 12: Revising Memories at UPenn
Revisiting UPenn added a personal touch to the trip and highlighted the bond between me and my daughter. This day reinforced my belief that family is the most important relationship to cherish. As I enter the second stage of my life, I am committed to nurturing and prioritizing these relationships and ensuring that they remain at the center of my actions and decisions.
A New Wealth
As I conclude this journey in New York City, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. Each day of this journey has provided me with valuable insights and reflections, documented in these essays in Substack, which are now a new wealth to me. These writings capture my true experiences and will continue to grow and enrich my life in this next chapter. Celebrating this finale is not just about reaching a destination, but about honoring the journey and the personal growth it has fostered.
