Today's drive took me about seven and a half hours and over 460 miles to reach the Crossroads of America, Indianapolis.
Arriving in Indianapolis in the late afternoon, I am immediately struck by the dynamic energy of downtown. The skyline is an impressive mix of historic and modern architecture, signaling both its rich past and forward-looking spirit. Known for its sports culture, Indianapolis is home to the Indianapolis 500, the Colts, and the Pacers. The city breathes athleticism and competition.
Our first stop is the Hyatt Regency Indianapolis, a hotel known for its central location and exceptional amenities. Upon checking in, we are offered an upgrade without asking. The room windows look out on the Indiana Statehouse, Indiana's neoclassical capital and home to the state government since 1888. The hotel's prime location puts us within walking distance of many of the city's top attractions, which is perfect for an evening stroll.
Eager to stretch our legs after the long drive, we walked to explore nearby attractions on our way to dinner. Monument Circle, in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, is a striking focal point dominated by the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. This historic landmark offers a glimpse into the city's past and its dedication to honoring those who have served.
For dinner, my wife chose P.F. Chang's so we could get some green vegetable Chinese food after missing our favorite cuisine for so long since the beginning of this trip. As I enjoyed each bite, I remembered the years of Reggie Miller's career with the Indiana Pacers. "Miller Time" was synonymous with his clutch performances and exciting NBA moments in the late 90s. During this time, I was working at SOM as a structural engineer on major projects such as the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, San Francisco International Airport - International Terminal Buildings. I felt it was my prime time up to that point.
Reggie Miller came so close to winning his first ring in the 2000 NBA Finals that his performance stayed with me long after I left SOM that year. I was at a crossroads then, and I made that move.
Indianapolis is not just a stop on my journey; it is a city with its own unique identity and charm. As I prepare to rest at the Hyatt Regency for the night, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences of the day and the promise of new adventures tomorrow.
